Five weeks in Belgium with the goal of sampling 25 of the best Belgian beers!
During my 8 months in Zagreb, I was enjoying the great beer, Karlovačko, trying to avoid Ožujsko, and having a few Pans here and there. Beer selection in Zagreb was limited but local brews were available during my travels throughout the region. In Serbia I became a fan of Lav, in Montenegro it was nikšičko but now, I'm in Brussels for 5 weeks and thoroughly looking forward to sampling the expertise of the Belgian brewers and the variety of beers they have to offer. I'm seeking to experience as many of these beers as possible and chronicle this adventure on this blog. My initial goal was 50 beers, then I realized this meant 10 new beers a week. While I'm sure I could handle this, I'm actually here to work so 25 is a much more reasonable goal :-) Check out the blog for updates from my stay and feel free to leave comments or suggestions about your favorite Belgian beers.

Nuetnigenough: An evening of beer, food, and friends
Our first choice was a 75cl bottle of Hop Harvest 2012 from the brewery De Ranke. I believe this was a limited edition beer and it's not listed on the brewery's website as a ongoing selection. These types of beer, closer to an IPA style, are one I don't usually gravitate towards but it was a good choice after out initial order, a Guldenberg 8.5% tripel from the same brewery, came to us apparently a bit skunked. The waiter open the bottle to a large amount of froth and foam and promptly took the bottle back for another one before it even hit the table; however, that skunked bottle was the last one. Its replacement was this pleasant surprise that I really enjoyed.
The Hop Harvest is 6% ABV and poured to a golden, cloudy color in the glass that you can see above. The head lingered on the glass and the flavors were citrus and hops which made think it was a bit like a light IPA. The taste was dry without over-drying your mouth and the alcohol flavor comes through in the aftertaste so here it resembles a stronger IPA. It was very good overall and paired amazingly well with the salted gruyere cheese we had to start the meal. We followed that up with the shrimp "devil style" which had a nice, spicy kick to it that was calmed by the beer.*

Brugge Tripel
Brugge Tripel was another beer enjoyed in the park on this same lovely day.
This tripel is 8.7% ABV and come from de Gouden Boom brewery, but I couldn't find a website for them. The beer is made in Brugge and one of the most well known products of the city. It has a malty and bitter flavor that hits right on the tip of your tongue. It's not nearly as sweet as other tripels but does get sweeter in the after taste. It was hard to judge the look or aroma in the bottle, but overall this beer left a good impression. I would recommend giving it a try and will definitely try it from the glass next time.
Ginette Natural White

The aroma was difficult to observe since we were drinking from bottles and through the dark glass it appears light but cloudy. The feel is smooth and the taste is unoffensive. It's not really that flavorful but it did pair nicely with the cupcakes-one which had a nice raspberry filling surprise.
I also enjoyed one of these that was left in my fridge a few days ago and would agree with Amy's assessment. It's not a fabulous beer but also not bad. It's light and easy to drink, perhaps a decent choice if you value organics.

I really enjoyed this and would recommend everyone try it if you ever come across it. My Oohers friends, Lauren my Belgian partner in crime/flatmate and Aimee, sampled the Bruges Zot Dubbel. The brewery has a nice cafe in their courtyard so we grabbed a table and finished our beers just in time for our tour. The tours are offered in four languages, Dutch,French, English, and German and our tour guide was a lovely women with a great sense of humor. There were many North Americans on our tour and an nice American couple offered to take a photo of the whole bunch (below).

Before we left the brewery, we stopped in the gift shop to pick up the special edition brew for which our guide made a good sales pitch on our tour. This one is a special edition quadruple ale at 11% ABV and was aged in old, oak barrels that served as red wine casks in a previous life time. This was called Straffe Hendrik Heritage because it is aged at one year in these barrels and was released in limited supply. The bottle we tried was a 2012 edition and is sold right at the brewery in set of three with a great little wooden souvenir box. Once we returned home from Bruges and had dinner, we cracked open bottle no 08796 and have bottle no 08959 chilling in our fridge, waiting to be shared at a dinner party.

Delerium Tremmes: Amy's Post!
Another house brewed option to try at Delerium is the Tremmens (well I guess it's not brewed on premise, but it is one of their beers) at 8.5% ABV and coming in around 3.5 Euros for 33cl draft.. Amy and I both grabbed a draft and I asked her to write up her thoughts on the beer. It's widely available in the US so I'm it's familiar. Here's what she says.
The beer reminds her of an amber style lager (it's a blonde) that is is golden in color and has just the right amount of foam. The flavor isn't as full bodied as other beers she's tried but was a "perfectly fine light-ish beer, served in an adorable chalice"

Leffe Blonde
Last Friday, I was lucky enough to have a visitor in Brussels to help me enjoy the weekend! Amy, who is often featured on my other blog since she is another American (from Minnesota!) that was in Croatia this year with me, came for a a 4 day break from Zagreb. We had a great weekend planned of sightseeing in both Brussels and Brugge with lots of beer tastings in the works. After an afternoon seeing the sights of central Brussels, the Parliamentarium (which is definitely worth a visit if you come to the city), and our home away from home-H&M, we enjoyed our first beers at my place. The first one on the menu was Leffe Blonde, sampled from a 75cl, corked bottle.
This beer is readily available abroad so it is probably familiar to a lot of you; therefor, I won't say much about it here. It was one of the only big bottles we found to share at the corner store and it is always a crowd favorite. The beer is 6.5% ABV and is brewed under the company umbrella of Stella Artois (AB-Inbev) so it has a really fancy website. It has a sweet aroma, a golden color, and pours well from the bottle to the glass. We both enjoyed it and I would recommend it, since it's likely one of the only beers on this blog that most of you can run to the store and purchase.

Chimay Blue
Last night my friends and I decided to try our luck at some pub trivia at Old Oak Pub in the Schumann district of Brussels. The trivia was lightning fast but the score keeping was painfully slow so we never did learn how we placed since we can't spend all night on a Monday at the bar. However, I did get the opportunity to add a few more beers to my list. The night's starter selection was Chimay Blue, a dark Trappist ale from an the abbey in Chimay. I have to admit, this wasn't my first run around with a Chimay beer. Luckily there is ample opportunity to sample some in Pittsburgh. I tend to frequent the Belgian brew pub in my neighborhood, Sharp Edge, where it is available and often enjoy a Chimay Tripple with a Chaud Chevre Salad or the Moules Frites at Point Brugge. Yum!
That being said, I already knew Chimay Blue is a pleasure, but registering in at 9% ABV and having a smoothness that makes it go down all to easy means you have to be careful with this one. Had I tried to continue with the Blue through the course of our quiz, I would have been in rare form. For those of you less familiar with this one, the color is a bit lighter than the picture would suggest but it's still a deep brown ale so it's not as thick as a stout or a porter. The aroma is light and alludes to the taste that will follow. The flavor is full and complex, as it changes quite a bit from start to finish and throughout the course of the glass. I like this one because there are lots of nuanced flavors in the beer that you will notice if you concentrate (of course the academic says that) and it's rich without being heavy. I like the aftertaste as well because it lets the beer linger for awhile so you can sip it satisfyingly slowly. Carbonation is mild which leaves it with a smooth feel that is the mostly the cause of the danger acknowledge above. Like I said, this one can be trouble. My notes told me I had the start of good buzz on when I was 3/4 of the way through :-)

Maes Pils
Maes Pils, brewed by Alken-Maes, is the first Belgian lager that I've tried. It's on draft at most pubs and is offered at 50cl for a quite cheap price. It's definitely not the beer to start your evening with or to seek out, but if you are on a budget, and need a drink, order one. It's 5.2 % ABV and just a bit more bitter than an American lager. The appearance is a translucent gold without a head on it. I actually sucked some of the beer up my nose trying to detect and aroma-it didn't have one. The mouthfeel is medium carbonation, smooth, like a lager should be but the taste was a burnt malt flavor-burnt not roasted-and really hits in the aftertaste. This is one I would not recommend for any other reason then you need a cheap beer or you plan to drink a lot. Here is the breakdown:

Blanche de Brugge
I enjoyed this beer following the Chimay Blue at the Old Oak so it had big shoes to fill....not really, I understand I'm on this quest to sample as many beers as possible so I'm definitely not looking to one up the brew I just tried, but it was definitely switching gears. The Blanche de Brugge comes from the De Bouden brewery and is a classic witbier, meaning wheat is added in additional to barley malts during the brewing process which gives the beer a less hoppy, more sour taste. Witbier is the Dutch name for these, in the USA we call them wheat beers, auf Deutsch sie heissen Weissbier oder Heffeweizen. This one was was sampled as a 50cl draft (no fruit) and the beer is 4.8% ABV. Like most wheat beers, the appearance is cloudy and yellow, but this one is a more of a bright yellow instead of the pale yellow that I'm used to seeing, which means this photo doesn't make it look very attractive.
The aroma was light but typical of a this style of beer with a hint of citrus and the mouthfeel was a bit flat but the smoothness made it easy to drink rather quickly. The flavor is a sour citrus one, about halfway between a lager and a cider, but it's quite mild. The beer itself is refreshing but nothing incredibly special. It's mild and easy to drink. Overall I'll give it a score of 72, it's a decent beer that is easy on the wallet.

Omer Blonde
So here goes my first attempt at at post after using the score card and taking notes as I'm drinking the beer...and still drinking it. This is 8% ABV blonde from Omer poured from the bottle at my place while I was working on dinner today. Its appearance is nice-it looks tempting, right :-) and it pours with a good amount of head; however this dies rather quickly and the beer really had no aroma except the normal yeast scent of any beer (Lauren concurred with me on this one). This may be entirely due to the glass I have it in which admittedly isn't great for the beer. The feel was highly carbonated, which I like and find refreshing and it certainly has a higher hop content then the other blondes I've tried. This gives it a full flavor but it's not as crisp as I usually prefer. The alcohol comes in the aftertaste which is quite dry. Overall, it's decent, definitely drinkable, and a fine accompaniment to my chicken breast, brown rice, and green bean dinner but it's not on the top of my list.

This seems to be a bit on the low side from what other sites have rated the beer but maybe the grocery store by was a little old and flat (hence the lack of head and aroma) or I'm just partial to more refreshing and less hoppy beers. You be the judge!

Let's get organized...
So I started this idea by just taking pictures and then posting them here. I want to develop a better way to describe and rate the beers because, frankly, I think all of them have been quite good I haven't added much commentary . I am a two time graduate of Anheuser Busch beer school thanks to the wonderful years I spent working for the company and its distributors before grad school- I will never give up my love of Budweiser (or Bud light and Bud Select) no matter how good these Belgian brews are-but I'm a little rusty on the ways of the beer connoisseur. Luckily, I've been a subscriber of Draft Magazine for a few years now so I am going to take a hint from them. On their website, the have many resources for the beer lover including a beer guide. This includes a scorecard to rate aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel, and overall impression. From now on, I will try to use this to add a bit more information on each beer. Now I have to get to back to work, as I've worked through an entire morning organizing this new endeavor instead of working on my dissertation data...whoops :-)
Westmalle Trappist Dubbel
After a days work at my apartment on Sunday, I finished the night with this dubbel. It was creamy, malty, and a rich brown color. For my first beer at home, it proved to be a good impulse choice at the grocery store a few days earlier. My apartment here has a limited choice of glassware, so I went with a wine glass...my usual.

Ramee
Enojyed at El Cafe, this was a late night selection that was easily my favorite of the evening. Again, the picture isn't great but the beer was very drinkable. I will have to try it again in the future and give a full report ;-)

Hopus
I tried this one at Le Corto. The picture isn't great. It was dark in the cafe and since I was attempting to use my Samsung Galaxy (first generation), I didn't have a flash. I've since given up on that phone and switched my Belgian sim to my newest phone, so I should have nothing but the best in photo quality here in the future. Unlike the name would suggest, this beer isn't very hoppy but had a lot of flavor. Really the only beers I don't like are strong IPA styles, so this good for me. It's produced by Brasserie Lefebvre and comes in around 8% ABV...now you see why this 50 beers in 5 five weeks was perhaps not so smart. Beers here are strong, so it's nice to enjoy them slowly (and as always, in moderation).

Chouffe
A good friend of mine, and wonderful French speaking guide to Belgium pictured here with me, suggested this one as one that is quite popular in Belgium. It's a bit fruity and light (8% ABV) so I will probably get drinking it again if I get a chance. It is best known by its gnome mascot, pictured below on both the glass and the sign, and on the website of Brasserie d’ Achouffe.
St. Feullien
Thursday night I met up with some friends (and made a new one) at Le Tavernier. They had a nice covered patio which made up for the cold weather and I tried yet another blonde :-) This blonde was the St. Feullien at 7.5% ABV. You can see from the picture that this had a nice foamy head and it certainly had a refreshing quality to it...but maybe this was just because it was my first beer after my first day of interviews at the European Parliament :-) This brewery, Brasserie St. Feuillien, has really great website that has an English version if you are interested.

Check out .le-tavernier on the web. The site is in French but Google Chrome will translate for you.

La Divine
Dinner with friends and the start of my Belgian adventure at Houtsiplou. This was a cute little restaurant in the center of Brussels. There were several burgers on the menu that looked amazing, but I had a fantastic steak and enjoyed this blonde from La Divine. La Divine is 9.5% ABV and a 33cl bottle was around 3.20 Euros. Check it out the brewery's website below.

Welcome to my new blog: Five weeks in Belgium
Hello and welcome to my new blog that chronicles my next five weeks in Belgium where I will be continuing my fieldwork for my dissertation and sampling all that this country has to offer. This blog will be simple. I am going to post each new Belgian beer that I try along with a little information about the beer and where I enjoyed it. It's not going to be fancy or incredibly informative, but it is going to be a fun way for me to keep track of my experience and serve as a reference after my return to the USA. For more details on my travels life abroad, etc. you can keep checking out my other blog: Andrea u Zagrebu. This one is thoroughly behind real time, with the latest post reflecting on half of my trip through Bosnia in March, but it will be updated eventually as well. I welcome any comments, questions, or recommendations/suggestions for beer.
